    A microbial approach to agriculture
The ability of animals to digest plant material is facilitated by tiny microbes in the gut that can break down complex carbohydrates. This dependency on microbes is most extreme in herbivores such as cows, which have developed a symbiotic relationship with their gut microbes.

As many of you know, MassDOT has plans to reconstruct the Allston Viaduct with the I-90 Interchange Improvement Project (details can be found here: http://bit.ly/2nGFCqw). While the plan does address impacts of the project on the Allston/Brighton neighborhood, it does not address the fact that this construction and project could have major traffic impacts on the Cambridgeport and Central Square neighborhoods. We highly suggest writing letters to Matthew Beaton, Secretary of Energy & Environmental Affairs by 5PM ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9. Suggested letter/email format & mailing addresses can be found below! ________________________ Dear Secretary Beaton: I am writing in support of the January 24, 2018 submittal made by Henrietta Davis, community representative to the I-90 Task Force, in response to the DEIR for I-90. I support the following 12 key Requests for Action or Further Study that she notes: - Transit and Multi-Modal Planning – implement now, not in 2040. - West Station – implement as part of first phase of I-90. - Grand Junction Rail Bridge over Soldiers Field Road – reconstruct as part of I-90 Project. - Right-Turn-Only Exit to River Street from Soldiers Field Road – retain a narrow one-lane exit ramp, designed with improved pedestrian/bicycle path. - Underpass under River Street Bridge for Pedestrians, Joggers, and Cyclists – support as part of future River Street Bridge reconstruction project. - Cambridge Access to/from the Turnpike – study expected travel times and develop acceptable traffic management plans. - Noise – develop effective noise barriers and other features to reduce existing harmful noise impacts from Turnpike on Cambridgeport, Riverside and Magazine Beach Park. - “Throat,” – develop new, comprehensive alternative that reduces current noise levels, is visually attractive from Cambridge, and has positive impact on Paul Dudley White Path. - Width of Turnpike – reconstruct to be as narrow as possible; do not build wider travel lanes and wide shoulders that do not exist in any other parts of the Turnpike between Route 128 and the Prudential Tunnel. - Parkland and Paul Dudley White Path – design the riverfront to enhance this world-class environmental resource, increasingly used for both commuting and recreation. - Construction Mitigation and Project Compensation – develop detailed action plan to mitigate impacts from years of aggravation and disruption, reduce construction noise, and effectively manage expected heavier traffic on Memorial Drive, Western Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue, the many bridges over the Charles River, and Cambridgeport and Riverside neighborhood streets. - Pathways on Cambridge side of Charles River – improve to accommodate increased use while Paul Dudley White Path is closed during construction. January 2018 in Review, From Ax-Throwing Bars to Ramen

Diva Indian Bistro (246 Elm St., Davis Square, Somerville): The Indian restaurant had been open for over 20 years.

This article has 18 other Boston locations (Show)

75 on Courthouse Square (220 Northern Ave.): 75 Chestnut and 75 on Liberty Wharf have a new similarly named sibling in the Seaport District, serving burgers, seafood and pasta entrees, and more — as well as a build-your-own bloody mary bar.

The Bagel Table (9 Boylston St., Chestnut Hill): Located in the longtime Rosie’s Bakery space at The Street, this new bakery features OMG! Bagels (a local brand) and serves some of Rosie’s greatest hits as well.

Blossom Bar (295 Washington St., Brookline): Like its Woburn sibling, the Brookline Sichuan Garden now has a snazzy cocktail bar inside. Those who loved dining at Sichuan Garden pre-revamp will still find a number of its dishes on the new, pared-down menu.

Cafe Landwer (900 Beacon St., Audubon Circle, Boston): This is the first United States location for the Israeli cafe chain, which will also open in Boston’s Cleveland Circle neighborhood.

Cava (1346 Boylston St., Fenway, Boston): This fast-casual Mediterranean chain comes by way of Washington, D.C., and it’s also expanding to Boston’s Back Bay and Cambridge’s Kendall Square, as well as Dedham and Hingham.

Globe Bar & Cafe (384 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): This Back Bay spot moved down the street, taking over the former Rattlesnake space. Yes, the rooftop will be open seasonally.

Grassona’s Italian (1704 Beacon St., Washington Square, Brookline): Fairsted Kitchen owner Steve Bowman briefly closed his restaurant to renovate it and reopen it as Grassona’s Italian, serving red-sauce Italian classics.

Hopsters (51 Sleeper St., Seaport District, Boston): The Newton-based brewpub and brew-your-own-beer facility has expanded to Boston proper (and has further expansion plans in the works). Go for a meal, a drink, and/or a brewing session.

Oisa Ramen (2 Broad St., Downtown Boston): This pop-up has found a cozy home in the Financial District, serving...

Olivia’s Bistro (136 Adams St., Nonantum, Newton): This Newton addition is serving wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizzas and more Italian food.

Tasty Burger (1 Nashua St., West End, Boston): The local burger chain’s sixth location is at North Station and features the group’s biggest bar (18 seats), at which beer and wine are served. There’s also a takeout window and free pool table.

Tatte Bakery & Cafe (399 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): Yet another expansion for the local cafe chain that now has eight outposts in Brookline, Boston, and Cambridge.

Xi’an Street Foods (182 Brighton Ave., Allston, Boston): Serving rougamo (flatbread sandwiches that resemble burgers), biang biang noodles, and other cuisine...

Bertucci’s (22 Merchants Row, Downtown Boston): The Faneuil Hall location of local pizza chain Bertucci’s opened way back in 1989.

Papagayo (283 Summer St., Fort Point, Boston): In an increasingly crowded neighborhood for Mexican restaurants and tequila bar, this location shut down, but Papagayo remains open in downtown Boston and Somerville’s Assembly Row.

Sultan’s Kitchen (116 State St., Downtown Boston): The Turkish restaurant, a staple of the downtown dining scene, had been around since 1981.

Tapeo Restaurant and Tapas Bar (266 Newbury St., Back Bay, Boston): Open for over 20 years, Tapeo cited the neighborhood’s “oppressive rents” as a factor in the restaurant’s closure.

Tilted Kilt (96 Brookline Ave., Fenway, Boston): Also known as “Scottish Hooters,” this “breastaurant” and sports bar chain didn’t last long in Fenway. In the region, a Billerica location remains open.

January 2018 in Review, From Ax-Throwing Bars to Ramen
2018 got off to a fast start in terms of local restaurant openings. A few Boston-based groups continued to expand in January, including Tatte Bakery & Cafe and Tasty Burger, while some non-local chains came to town as well, including Israel's Cafe Landwer and D.C.-based Cava, both serving fast-casual food with a Mediterranean feel.

Cambridge Police Department added 2 new photo...

Earlier this afternoon, while one of our officers was enforcing no left turns at Massachusetts Avenue and Prospect Street, they observed a SUV heading west on Mass Ave making an illegal left turn onto Western Avenue. The officer pulled over the vehicle and immediately smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the two occupants. The driver was not able to provide a license when requested nor any paperwork associated with the rental car. Backup from a nearby cruiser was requested to support the stop due to the occupants furtive movements. The operator, Nathan Brito, 24, Medford, and the passenger were then asked to exit the vehicle and a search of the vehicle was subsequently conducted. While searching the vehicle, officers located four plastic clear bags containing an estimated four ounces of marijuana in the glove compartment. Brito stated there was a knife in his backpack in the rear of the vehicle. Officers then recovered the folding knife with a handle shaped like a gun. All four bags of marijuana and the folding knife were placed in the Property Unit as evidence. Brito will be charged with Possession to Distribute a Class D Drug. The vehicle will be held in custody as the investigation is ongoing. All in all, a job well done to our officers for their professionalism and thorough on-site investigation, which ensured this stop was a safe one and without incident.
