A sarpech is a traditional Indian ornament used mainly by noblemen on the fronts of their turbans. On the back is a shaft to hold a feather, so the wearer can add even more panache to their look. Twelve different gems adorn this ornament, nine of which form the standard combination of the talismanic navaratna. Object: Indian, Turban Ornament (Sarpech) (detail), 19th century, white nephrite jade base, with gems set in gold, and a gilded metal pin.
