  • May 30, 2018 8:54 a.m. — (Closed with status: Case Resolved. Dear Constituent,. When utility companies dig into a street they obviously disturb the soil underneath the roadway. In some cases excavations can go down up to 10 feet. Cities and Towns expect that there will be some settlement after the backfilling has been completed. That is why in Boston all backfilled paved excavations are considered temporary. After a certain period of time, the temporary repair is then permanently repaired. The Boston Public Works Construction Inspection Unit (CIU) will identify temporary patches that are not smooth and level and have the utility or private contractor repair them. We do not expect temporary patches to look as good as permanent patches. However we do definitively make utilities and private contractors do over temporary patches until the permanent repair can be done. As far as the active Dorchester Ave patch work is concerned the inspectors are stating that the temporary patches are acceptable until the permanent repairs are done. For any questions or concerns, please contact the number listed below. Sincerely,. Mark Cardarelli. Supervisor of Utility Coordination and Compliance. Boston Public Works Department. 617-635-4951 Office.)
