The state Senate late last month passed legislation for criminal justice reform, which included the repeal of mandatory minimum sentences of some drug offenses and raising the age at which youths can be charged as adults, as well as other charges. Local state Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz has been a vocal proponent for criminal justice reform. SLOW STREETS COME TO JP

Mayor Martin Walsh, local elected officials, and residents gathered in Stonybrook on Nov. 1 to celebrate the implementation of the Neighborhood Slow Streets program. The Slow Streets program is part of the City’s Vision Zero project, which is a commitment of resources to eliminating fatal and serious traffic crashes by 2030. The effort is being led by BTD in collaboration with other City departments, including Public Works, the Boston Police Department, and Emergency Medical Services. The Slow Streets program includes speed humps and “Welcome mats,” which will state the speed limit on the street, among other changes. For more information, visit visionzeroboston.org.

New license requirements start in October 2020

Massachusetts residents will need to change their identification cards by Oct. 2020 in order to travel in the U.S. by airplane or enter certain U.S. government buildings as part of the Massachusetts REAL ID program, according to a press release. Residents will be able to use their driver’s license for these situations if it is REAL ID compliant, and those licenses will begin to be implemented in March 2018.
