"What also courses unmistakably through “Shak...

"What also courses unmistakably through “Shakespeare in Love’’ is a sheer love of theater and the eccentric, egotistical, obsessive, theatrical people who make it." The Boston Globe's Don Aucoin raves about SpeakEasy Stage Company's Shakespeare in Love, now through February 10 at the Roberts Studio Theatre at the Calderwood Pavilion, here at the BCA!

A lively, stylish 'Shakespeare in Love' at SpeakEasy - The Boston Globe
"Shakespeare in Love'' actually revolves around two romances, not just one. At the center of Lee Hall's play, now receiving its New England premiere at SpeakEasy Stage Company, is the affair between the besotted Bard and a woman named Viola de Lesseps, who has disguised herself as a man so she can perform onstage.

Take a close look at last weekend's "dreamy, rainbow brite" Rainbow Collapse, created for BCA's Run of the Mills series by Anya Smolnikova and Jared Williams in this feature by Greg Cook on Wonderland: A Magazine of Arts and Cultures.

In 'Rainbow Collapse,' Fearing Ecological Destruction, Dreaming A 'Utopian And Impossible' Future
"Rainbow Collapse" -part of the "Run of the Mills" performance series at the Boston Center for the Arts-"is a piece about working in the gap between what we want and what we can do, or between the vision and the reality," says Anya Smolnikova, who developed the ecological-technological show with Jared Williams. "It's about reconnecting with something true and magical."

Thursday, February 1, 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm – Landscape Maintenance Practices for Native Bees

Pollinators (including honey bees, native bees, birds, bats, butterflies, and other species) are essential to healthy ecosystems. Pollinators support the success and vigor of flowering plants, making ecosystems stronger, more resilient, and enhancing the environment for human populations. Decades of stressors (including the loss, degradation, and fragmentation of habitat, reduction in the number and quality of food sources, reduction in the availability of sites for breeding, nesting, and roosting, and improper use of pesticides and herbicides) have severely and adversely altered the health and numbers of pollinator populations.

Saturday, February 3, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Make Life Easier with Living Mulch

How many people were drawn to gardening by a love of mulch? Not many, and yet our landscapes are full of it. Thick layers of red mulch and volcano mulching under trees is commonplace—but there is a better way. Canada mayflower, foamflower, and beech fern are just a few alternatives that can take the place of traditional wood mulch in the garden. Come to Garden in the Woods on Saturday, February 3 from 1- 3 for a class with Dan Jaffee on Living Mulch. $26 for NEWFS members, $32 for nonmembers. Image from gobotany! Wednesday, January 24, 7:00 pm – What in the World is a Margaritifera margaritifera, and Why Should I Care?

The freshwater pearl mussel, Margaritifera margaritifera, inhabits swift, shallow riffles and runs of clear, cool streams… exactly the kinds of streams that humans love to walk along and wade in. With even minimal coaching, anyone can find them…you just have to know where and how to look. Worldwide, this was one of the most widespread and abundant freshwater mussel species, but one that is now in considerable peril. In this Ware River Nature Club talk on Wednesday, January 24, we’ll get to know this species—its distribution, habitat requirements, life-cycle, conservation, and restoration; “and I hope I can convince you that you should care,” adds presenter Professor John Baker of Clark University. The presentation begins at 7 pm at the Rutland Public Library. For more information email warerivernatureclub@yahoo.com

Saturday, February 3, 9:30 am – 12:30 am – Avian Coloration: An Art and Science Workshop

The world of birds is full of diverse feather colors that combine to form amazing plumage patterns– from neon yellow to somber black. How and why do birds achieve these decorative feats? Beginning with a microscopic look at feathers and expanding out to a broad perspective of patterns across bird families, Harvard University graduate student Dakota McCoy will use feather and bird specimens from the University’s collections to explore how and why this diversity of forms arose. Artist Erica Beade will show participants how to capture the nuance of avian color and form in their drawings. This Harvard Museum of Natural History class will take place Saturday, February 3 from 9:30 – 12:30 at the Museum, 26 Oxford Street in Cambridge. Fees: $45 HMNH members/$55 nonmembers.
