The two parcels on either side of Doughboy Doughnuts 🍩 have had their large projects approved this week by the BPDA. Projects are described in the attached article. Of note the Doughboy site is owned now by the Hotel developer. At the request of Impact Advisory Group members the two developments will pay for the redesign and installation of sidewalk widening at the “node” of Dot Ave and W Broadway surrounding Broadway MBTA Station increasing queuing space for bus stops and pedestrian flow. Along with other redesign of this intersection through our advocacy with the improvements coming with South Bay Harbor Trail and redesign around the W Broadway Hotel this block will have tremendously improved pedestrian, bike, and vehicular flow come the end of this year. http://sampan.org/2018/01/residential-developments-in-south-boston-and-east-boston-move-forward/

For all the changes in transportation technology since the first tunnels were dug — the rise of the automobile, the proliferation of bike lanes and ferries, our growing addiction to ride-hailing apps and dreams of a future filled with autonomous vehicles — the subway remains the only way to move large numbers of people around the city.

    The Case for the Subway
The 4 line in the Bronx. Damon Winter/The New York Times Long before it became an archaic, filthy, profligate symbol of everything wrong with our broken cities, New York's subway was a marvel - a mad feat of engineering and an audacious gamble on a preposterously ambitious vision.

I’m perplexed at the thought of the City of Boston footing the bill for the bridge and the recovery centers alone . We need to get the Commonwealth on board in this endeavor in my humble opinion . But if people are spending $1100 to $1400 a Sq/ft next door to Pine Street Inn , why shouldn’t selling off a small portion of that island for private development be on the table for what if done right could be a first in the Nation approach at addiction recovery ? We have been first at many things so let’s not be afraid to dream big?

Developer could help pay for bridge to Boston's Long Island - The Boston Globe
Mayor Marty Walsh kicked off his new term by vowing to rebuild the bridge to Boston's Long Island. The price tag? Up to $100 million. He'll use as much as $30 million in parking meter revenue. He'll consider selling bonds to raise money.

A full-service campus will meet the most pressing need we have in the fight against opioids: more treatment beds, more transitional supports and sober housing, and a more seamless “continuum of care” across the journey from detox to a life reclaimed. Too many people are relapsing because a solid next step is not there for them in time.

A new bridge to recovery on Long Island - The Boston Globe
A place of natural beauty and serenity, Long Island once played a prominent role in Boston's recovery landscape. Now it is at the heart of our next step in the fight against the opioid crisis.

"The city has commissioned studies on the feasibility of building large berms around South Boston and erecting a massive, multibillion-dollar sea barrier in Boston Harbor that could rise some 25 feet over the ocean surface and extend from Hull to Deer Island."

Threat of rising sea levels hits home - The Boston Globe
With its gradually sinking, low-lying lands, and development right up to the water's edge, Boston has long been considered uncommonly vulnerable to rising sea levels. But that long-term climate forecast became bracingly immediate on Thursday when a powerful winter storm, of a type known to meteorologists as the bomb cyclone, whipped up a record tide that sent waves surging through the streets of downtown Boston.

Speculation on the best use of Widett Circle has included a soccer stadium, the Olympic village and arena, housing and commercial development, perhaps even the second headquarters for Amazon.
