A few years ago Councillor Denise Simmons and I co-sponsored an order asking about a police substation in Central Square. Here is an update I received from the Cty today: The City Manager wanted to inform you that the City has signed an eight-year sublease with Cambridge Savings Bank to enable a Substation for the Cambridge Police Department in Central Square. Under the terms of the agreement, the Cambridge Police will have access to space in Carl Barron Plaza next to Cambridge Savings Bank at 628 Massachusetts Avenue. The new Central Square Substation will hold a small lobby, desk space for a computer, a bathroom for CPD employees, and storage space for patrol bicycles. Department signage and a police callbox will be featured outside of the station. The plan is for the Substation to be operational and open by early October; however, the additional officers that will be assigned to the Substation in Central Square will begin working their new shifts by early August. This Substation provides an opportunity for increased presence and provision of police services in a centrally located portion of the City. The Substation in Central Square will be open to the public when officers assigned to this location are not patrolling the square on foot or by bike.
