We were shocked and saddened to hear about the death of S. J. Brooks. S. J. was a valued member of the BCA staff when he worked here in 2012 as a member of our Visual Arts team. He was a kind-hearted, generous, and wonderfully creative person with a deep commitment to his work in the community. We extend our sincerest condolences to S.J.'s family and friends during this horrible time. https://www.google.com/amp/boston.cbslocal.com/2018/05/21/cougar-attack-victim-sj-brooks-washington-seattle-boston/amp/

Isabella loved modern dance, and even invited American dance pioneer Ruth St. Denis to perform at the Gardner Museum in 1908. This caused quite a scandal, as Ruth danced barefoot! 😱

We’ve been head-over-heels for Fra Angelico lately (can you blame us?) but our art collection has many more Madonnas to behold! This 16th century painting has similar radiating gold lines like the ones in Fra Angelico’s reliquaries, but the bright color palette and botanical imagery put this painting in a category all on its own. Image: After Martin Schongauer, The Virgin and Child of the Rose Bower (detail), mid 16th century, oil on panel.

Through Sunday, June 3 – Cao Jun: Hymns to Nature

Cao Jun was born in 1966 and raised in Jiangsu Province in southern China, where the lakes and rivers shaped his childhood environment. For eighteen years he studied and worked near Mount Tai, one of China’s most ancient places of worship and ceremonial ritual. Concrete experience of both aquatic sites and mountainous terrain informed Cao Jun’s approach to artistic creation. After formal training in Beijing, he settled in New Zealand yet traveled throughout Europe and the United States. More recently he journeyed to the polar regions and northern Alaska.
