The magnificent Gothic stained-glass window from the cathedral of Soissons in France is the centerpiece for the Chapel, and bathes the Long Gallery in colorful, dappled light. Shining beneath it is a consecrated altar used by Isabella–a devout Anglo-Catholic–for the celebration of Mass.

One thing’s for sure: Sargent was a master at gestural brushstrokes! This towering Spanish Madonna wears a shimmering halo and robes that cascade gold. Her outfit is completed not by meticulous details, but in the viewer’s imagination. Image: John Singer Sargent, A Spanish Madonna, about 1879, oil on panel.

It’s a yellow kind of day! 💛 The artist, Dewing, created a striking contrast between the precisely modeled face and arms, and the feathery brushstrokes of the dress. Isabella hung the painting in the Yellow Room, a setting perfectly attuned to the hue of the woman’s dress. Image: Thomas Wilmer Dewing, A Lady in Yellow, 1888, oil on panel.

Isabella thought the painting on the right (Juana of Austria and a Young Girl) was a Titian, and therefore hung it in the Titian room opposite his Europa painting. Although not by Titian, it was painted at the same time that the Europa painting arrived at the Spanish court. Image: Sofonisba Anguissola, Juana of Austria and a Young Girl, 1561-1562, oil on canvas.
