Honeymooning in New Zealand

Two couples from Jamaica Plain—Jason McGraw and Elliot Rabinowitz, and Katie Ruigh and Blair Lapointe—traveled to New Zealand for their respective honeymoons. They had never met. Then, while climbing Isthmus Peak, Blair noticed that Jason was wearing a shirt from Boston, and said hello. It turns out the couples live down the street from each other in Jamaica Plain. After hiking the trail together, they took this picture at the summit on Nov. 14. From left to right, Blair Lapointe, Katie Ruigh, Jason McGraw, and Elliot Rabinowitz.

Here’s Looking at You, JP: Clockwise or counterclockwise, which way do you walk around Jamaica Pond?

The first two times I sat on a bench at Jamaica Pond and counted how many people were going left or right, one direction edged out the other by a statistically insignificant margin. I figured there was probably little difference. But I continued my count and, after 10 more two-hour sittings, the findings were decisive with one direction predominating every time, often by a wide margin. In total, 25 percent more folks turn right when they reach the path and proceed in a counterclockwise direction.
