We’ve been head-over-heels for Fra Angelico lately (can you blame us?) but our art collection has many more Madonnas to behold! This 16th century painting has similar radiating gold lines like the ones in Fra Angelico’s reliquaries, but the bright color palette and botanical imagery put this painting in a category all on its own. Operatic soprano Dame Nellie Melba was a Gilded Age celebrity and admirer of both Gardner and her museum. She performed at Fenway Court in 1905, where she sang into the Courtyard from the top of the stairs to the Dutch Room. Image: Ernest Walter Histed, Nellie Melba, 1899, platinum print.
