Joseph Lindon Smith was an artist and close friend of Gardner’s. His fanciful design for her museum’s majordomo reflects their shared love of theatre and costuming. Work: Joseph Lindon Smith, Uniform Design for Theobaldo Travi, 1901-1903, graphite, ink and watercolor on paper.

Made for the tourist trade, this tray seems to have been bought by Isabella Gardner at a hotel in Varanasi, India. The building depicted on the tray recalls local monuments, which have onion-shaped domes, domed kiosks (chhatris), and arched entrances. The Bara Imambara in nearby Lucknow, a complex of structures built around 1784, with many gateways, courtyards, and monumental facades, may have been the source of the motif. Object: Unknown artist, Tray, about 1880, brass, tin, and lac.
