Composer-violinist Charles Martin Loeffler was one of Isabella Stewart Gardner’s closest friends. When Isabella completed her museum, Loeffler used its Music Room to debut “Pagan Poem,” one of his most important compositions. Loeffler and his friend Mabel Hunt Slater gave this cast of Loeffler’s hand to Gardner as Christmas present in 1914. Object: P.P. Caproni and Brother (active 1892 - 1927), Charles Martin Loeffler’s Hand, 1914, plaster.

This painting stands out in the Gardner Museum, a French Rococo work hidden in plain sight among Italian Renaissance paintings. What we wonder about is the absence of the titular character. Venus is missing from ‘The Chariot of Venus’! Curators believe this work may be part of a larger painting that was later cut into sections. This photo of the Museum’s Chapel features Paul César Helleu’s The Interior of the Abbey Church of Saint Denis. The painting is surrounded by dark wood and stained glass, some featuring images of Saint Denis and some from churches in France. The end result is a work of art within an installation that is a work of art itself, something Isabella was a master of.
