Happy birthday, Anders Zorn! The painter became a close friend of Isabella after the two met at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, where Zorn was exhibiting The Omnibus. After learning that the man she was speaking with about the work was in fact the artist Isabella reportedly said, “I feel that either we will soon become enemies, or also forever, very, very good friends. Come to tea with me this afternoon.” #AndersZorn #OnThisDay Painting: Anders Zorn, The Omnibus (detail), 1892, oil on canvas.

Made for the tourist trade, this tray seems to have been bought by Isabella Gardner at a hotel in Varanasi, India. The building depicted on the tray recalls local monuments, which have onion-shaped domes, domed kiosks (chhatris), and arched entrances. The Bara Imambara in nearby Lucknow, a complex of structures built around 1784, with many gateways, courtyards, and monumental facades, may have been the source of the motif. Object: Unknown artist, Tray, about 1880, brass, tin, and lac.
