Grassona's Brings Italian Cuisine to Washington Square
Fairsted Kitchen at 1704 Beacon Street in Brookline was officially reborn as Grassona's Italian on January 24. Owner Steve Bowman felt it was time for a change. "We really believe that restaurants are about evolution," he says. "I have this quirky idea that everyone can relate to the idea of an Italian grandmother who just wants you to eat and be happy."

January 2018 in Review, From Ax-Throwing Bars to Ramen

Grassona’s Italian (1704 Beacon St., Washington Square, Brookline): Fairsted Kitchen owner Steve Bowman briefly closed his restaurant to renovate it and reopen it as Grassona’s Italian, serving red-sauce Italian classics.

This article has 18 other Boston locations (Show)

75 on Courthouse Square (220 Northern Ave.): 75 Chestnut and 75 on Liberty Wharf have a new similarly named sibling in the Seaport District, serving burgers, seafood and pasta entrees, and more — as well as a build-your-own bloody mary bar.

The Bagel Table (9 Boylston St., Chestnut Hill): Located in the longtime Rosie’s Bakery space at The Street, this new bakery features OMG! Bagels (a local brand) and serves some of Rosie’s greatest hits as well.

Blossom Bar (295 Washington St., Brookline): Like its Woburn sibling, the Brookline Sichuan Garden now has a snazzy cocktail bar inside. Those who loved dining at Sichuan Garden pre-revamp will still find a number of its dishes on the new, pared-down menu.

Cafe Landwer (900 Beacon St., Audubon Circle, Boston): This is the first United States location for the Israeli cafe chain, which will also open in Boston’s Cleveland Circle neighborhood.

Cava (1346 Boylston St., Fenway, Boston): This fast-casual Mediterranean chain comes by way of Washington, D.C., and it’s also expanding to Boston’s Back Bay and Cambridge’s Kendall Square, as well as Dedham and Hingham.

Globe Bar & Cafe (384 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): This Back Bay spot moved down the street, taking over the former Rattlesnake space. Yes, the rooftop will be open seasonally.

Hopsters (51 Sleeper St., Seaport District, Boston): The Newton-based brewpub and brew-your-own-beer facility has expanded to Boston proper (and has further expansion plans in the works). Go for a meal, a drink, and/or a brewing session.

Oisa Ramen (2 Broad St., Downtown Boston): This pop-up has found a cozy home in the Financial District, serving...

Olivia’s Bistro (136 Adams St., Nonantum, Newton): This Newton addition is serving wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizzas and more Italian food.

Tasty Burger (1 Nashua St., West End, Boston): The local burger chain’s sixth location is at North Station and features the group’s biggest bar (18 seats), at which beer and wine are served. There’s also a takeout window and free pool table.

Tatte Bakery & Cafe (399 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): Yet another expansion for the local cafe chain that now has eight outposts in Brookline, Boston, and Cambridge.

Xi’an Street Foods (182 Brighton Ave., Allston, Boston): Serving rougamo (flatbread sandwiches that resemble burgers), biang biang noodles, and other cuisine...

Bertucci’s (22 Merchants Row, Downtown Boston): The Faneuil Hall location of local pizza chain Bertucci’s opened way back in 1989.

Diva Indian Bistro (246 Elm St., Davis Square, Somerville): The Indian restaurant had been open for over 20 years.

Papagayo (283 Summer St., Fort Point, Boston): In an increasingly crowded neighborhood for Mexican restaurants and tequila bar, this location shut down, but Papagayo remains open in downtown Boston and Somerville’s Assembly Row.

Sultan’s Kitchen (116 State St., Downtown Boston): The Turkish restaurant, a staple of the downtown dining scene, had been around since 1981.

Tapeo Restaurant and Tapas Bar (266 Newbury St., Back Bay, Boston): Open for over 20 years, Tapeo cited the neighborhood’s “oppressive rents” as a factor in the restaurant’s closure.

Tilted Kilt (96 Brookline Ave., Fenway, Boston): Also known as “Scottish Hooters,” this “breastaurant” and sports bar chain didn’t last long in Fenway. In the region, a Billerica location remains open.

January 2018 in Review, From Ax-Throwing Bars to Ramen
2018 got off to a fast start in terms of local restaurant openings. A few Boston-based groups continued to expand in January, including Tatte Bakery & Cafe and Tasty Burger, while some non-local chains came to town as well, including Israel's Cafe Landwer and D.C.-based Cava, both serving fast-casual food with a Mediterranean feel.

We have joined efforts with Fenway Community ...

We have joined efforts with Fenway Community Development Corporation on a campaign regulate corporate short-term rentals. There is increasing evidence that nightly rental platforms such as AirBnB, as well as corporate short-stays, take apartments off the long-term rental market and are a factor in driving up rents to unaffordable levels. This is why we have launched a postcard campaign to support legislation from Rep. Aaron Michlewitz (H.3454). For more information on how to get involved in this statewide campaign, or to sign a postcard, please email or call Jason Desrosier at Desrosier@allstonbrightoncdc.org or (617) 787-3874 x206. We will be dropping off the postcards to City Hall and the State House in February.

Fat Baby (118 Dorchester St., South Boston): This Loco Taqueria sibling serves up sushi, cocktails, and more in a loud, energetic space in Southie.

Highland Fried (1217 Cambridge St., Inman Square, Cambridge): Earlier this year, the Highland Kitchen team took over East Coast Grill; now, they’ve revamped it into Highland Fried, zeroing in on fried chicken, barbecue, and Tiki drinks.

Kaju Tofu House (636 Beacon St., Kenmore Square, Boston): With one location in Allston and one recently defunct one in Harvard Square, Kaju Tofu House is back up to two locations with this new one in Kenmore, serving a range of Korean food.

Kor Tor Mor (24 College Ave., Davis Square, Somerville): Thai food with a focus on Bangkok street foods in the former Golden Light space.

La Colombe (29 Northern Ave., Seaport District, Boston): Boston’s second location of the Philadelphia-based coffee roaster and cafe chain. It’s also coming to Back Bay.

Moody’s Delicatessen (500 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): Waltham’s acclaimed delicatessen and charcuterie destination now has a Boston proper sibling serving up deli sandwiches and more. Note: Only open on weekdays.

Our Fathers (197 N. Harvard St., Lower Allston): A twofer from the Tasty Burger/Citizen Public House/Franklin Cafe team — a Jewish delicatessen on one side (takeout) and a full-service modern Israeli restaurant and bar on the other side. The bar’s got a strong gin focus.

Snappy Kitchen (234 Elm St., Davis Square, Somerville): Snappy Ramen hopped across Davis into a larger space and expanded its menu to include sushi, gyoza, and more — changing its name in the process. There’s still ramen, though.

Sunny Cafe (1000 Bennington St., East Boston): Sushi burritos, poke, bubble tea, and more.

Sushi Kappo (86 Peterborough St., Fenway, Boston): A casual spot from the team behind Ebi Sushi in Union Square. The new place serves sushi burritos, poke bowls, ramen, and more.

Sweetgreen (225 Franklin St., Downtown Boston): DC’s salad chain keeps expanding its leafy Boston-area reach. The newest location is in Post Office Square and is optimized for mobile and online order pick-up.

Trillium Garden at the Substation (4228 Washington St., Roslindale, Boston): Ever-popular Fort Point brewery Trillium has opened another seasonal “beer garden,” albeit indoors, in the old Roslindale substation. It’s expected to stay open into the spring.

16 Handles (1309 Beacon St., Coolidge Corner, Brookline): Another nail in the coffin of the froyo era.

British Beer Company (85 Providence Hwy., East Walpole): There are around a dozen other locations of this local chain around the area, but the longtime Walpole one is now gone. British Beer Company features an extensive beer list.

East Coast Grill (1271 Cambridge St., Inman Square, Cambridge): It’s really gone this time, sort of. The Highland Kitchen owners...

Emerald Lounge (200 Stuart St., Theatre District, Boston): The Revere Hotel’s nightclub closed in December, and the hotel plans to replace it with a new restaurant in spring 2018.

Globe Bar & Cafe (565 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): It’s not gone for good; it’s just relocating down the street to the former Rattlesnake space. It plans to reopen around January 2018.

Kamado Super Fusion (779 Centre St, Jamaica Plain, Boston): This sushi spot was open for a few years. It’ll be replaced by an Asian noodle soup spot called Asian Noodle Soup.

La Motta’s (1357 Washington St., South End, Boston): This Italian restaurant opened in late 2015 under the same ownership of the longtime previous occupant of the space, Union Bar & Grill. Now, it’ll be taken over by the Alpine Restaurant Group, reportedly opening a new Burro Bar there.

Pikaichi (1 Brighton Ave., Allston, Boston): This Allston ramen destination closed due to a rent hike but will try to relocate soon.

Sunset Grill & Tap and Patron’s (130 Brighton Ave., Allston): End of an era for this longtime comfort food spot with a massive beer list (and its upstairs pool hall, Patron’s). Sibling spot Sunset Cantina remains open on Comm. Ave.
