In 2011 Anthony Bourdain paid a visit to East Cambridge during the "Boston" episode of his show "No Reservations." He came to East Cambridge in pursuit of his constant goal to experience the people, traditions and flavors of different cultures. In this particular case, he was drawn to the Azorean Portuguese culture that reminded him of his earliest years learning to cook in Provincetown. He didn't come to the East Cambridge / Inman Square area because it was a "dining destination," he came because the neighborhood's heart and soul embraced diversity of culture, and food was just one of the ways it did that. He wanted everyone to open their eyes and see our differences and celebrate them, even if it got messy. During his visit to Boston, while visiting the radio show of Howie Carr, Bourdain is quoted saying, "Hanging out only with people who agree with me is about as boring a prospect as I can imagine." So, maybe today you'll stop into that market you've been curious about or you'll try that new restaurant you've been meaning to try. Or maybe you'll even buy that plane ticket for that trip you've been dreaming about. And, maybe during dinner tonight you'll raise a glass of Vinho Verde and say "saúde!" No matter what we drink and no matter how we say "cheers!" -- we all appreciate being fed good food and being surrounded by good company. RIP Mr. Anthony Bourdain. You have a place saved at so many tables.

Burro Bar (1357 Washington St., South End, Boston): The Painted Burro’s little sibling in Brookline, Burro Bar, now has a South End sibling in the former La Motta’s space, serving tacos, tequila, and more.

Dos Diablos Taco Bar / Two Saints Tavern (52 Gainsborough St., Fenway, Boston): This duo of adjacent restaurants opened in the former Our House East space...

Hamilton Restaurant & Bar (1366 Beacon St., Brookline): Located in the former Yasu space, Hamilton (named after the suddenly very popular historical figure) serves “good, simple, seasonal food, rooted in classic cooking” from an alum of West Bridge, Salts, and 80 Thoreau.

Minigrow (565 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): A more pared-down version of its big sibling, Honeygrow, which has also recently expanded to Boston, Minigrow serves fast-casual stir-fries. The company is based out of Philly.

Pavement Coffeehouse (415 Western Ave., Brighton, Boston): This is the seventh location for the local cafe chain, and this one includes cafe space as well as a roasting facility and commissary kitchen.

Wild Pops (3213 Washington St., Jamaica Plain, Boston): A popsicle shop with flavors like spicy pineapple, tamarind Thai chili, and dark Belgian chocolate.

British Beer Company (29 Andover St., Danvers): This is the third location of the local pub chain to shutter in recent months, following Framingham and Walpole locations. Nearly a dozen remain open in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Bus Stop Pub (252 Western Ave., Allston, Boston): This dive bar closed after nearly 40 years, making way for new development in a rapidly changing neighborhood.

Chilli Duck (829 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): Increasing Back Bay rents have claimed another longtime restaurant, this one a Thai spot near the Prudential.

Doretta Taverna & Raw Bar (79 Park Plaza, Boston): Chef and restaurateur Michael Schlow opened this Greek restaurant in the space that previously housed his Italian restaurant, Via Matta. He has declined to renew the lease. One of his other restaurants, Tico, remains open nearby.

Harry O’s (1405 Washington St., South End, Boston): Like Cristo’s above, a longtime pizzeria and sub shop.

Lemon Grass Thai Cuisine (1710 Massachusetts Ave., Lexington): This Thai restaurant is now under new ownership, set to reopen as another Thai restaurant, this time called Love at First Bite, in August.

The Maiden (28 West Broadway, South Boston): After almost three years, this cheese, charcuterie, and oyster spot from the team behind the now-defunct Sam’s at Louis said goodbye to Southie.

Intermission Tavern (228 Tremont St., Theater District, Boston): This pre- and post-show drinking spot will close around late June 2018, to be replaced by a place called Fourth Wall.

May 2018 included a number of interesting restaurant openings, from a South Boston spot specializing in "cookout cuisine" (with a boozy rainbow sherbet drink, too) to a casual Downtown Crossing restaurant where robots do most of the meal preparation.

"Highland Fried plays to Inman’s “funky” side, especially with the tiki bar, Romano says. “That’s where the kind of funky Inman Square thing comes into play, where it’s like, ‘What does that really have to do with fried chicken or barbecue? A tiki place?’ But that’s why I like it, because it’s different. Why not?” says Romano."

After Detour, Highland Kitchen Owners Welcome Highland Fried to...
The story of the new Inman Square restaurant Highland Fried starts and ends with a local chef's exalted fried chicken, but a detour where the owners veered from their gut instincts nearly derailed the now-flourishing restaurant. Husband-and-wife restaurateurs Mark Romano and Marci Joy-owners of...

Our Officers have identified a suspect, arres...

Our Officers have identified a suspect, arrested another suspect, and recovered a firearm and ammunition following two separate overnight gunshot incidents. A shooting occurred at Richie’s Shell this morning on 1001 Cambridge Street in Cambridge at 3:58 a.m. The victim is a 50-year-old clerk at the station, who confronted a black male outside the station after they stole a bottle of water. The suspect retrieved a bag from a vehicle, pulled out a firearm and shot at the clerk. The driver of the vehicle fled in one direction and the shooter fled on foot. The clerk was conveyed to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries after the shot grazed his foot. He has since been released from the hospital. After an initial investigation, officers recovered the firearm used in the shooting in a black plastic bag on Inman Street. The driver of the vehicle was also identified by officers, stopped and taken into the Cambridge Police Station for questioning. The suspect who fled on foot is described as a black male with long hair. He was wearing dark pants and a blue shirt. Officers have identified that suspect and continue to investigate this incident. Earlier in the evening, police made an arrest following an investigation of gunshots that occurred late last night in the area of Washington Elms and Harvard Street. Following a ShotSpotter activation and calls to the Emergency Communications Department, Cambridge Police responded to the Washington Elms parking lot on Harvard Street last night at approximately 11:53 p.m. for a report of multiple gunshots. Two vehicles – described as sedans – were reported leaving the scene at the time of the shooting. There are currently no reported injuries or victims, however, two unoccupied vehicles parked adjacent to each other were damaged by gunshots. Cambridge Police searched the area and were also able to locate additional shell casings in the area. Reporting parties indicated a large group fighting in the area approximately 30 minutes prior to the gunshots. Multiple individuals in the area of the gunshots were stopped and questioned. One of the individuals – Abigail Riskey, 19, 265 Columbia Street in Cambridge -- was asked to remove items out of her purse to ensure there were no weapons in her possession. One of the items was something heavy inside of a piece of cloth. Officers unknotted the cloth and observed a box with a pictured handgun and bullets on the cover. Upon further inspection, the box contained numerous rounds of 9MM ammunition. Riskey did not provide a license to carry ammunition or a firearm and was placed under arrest for Possession of Ammunition without an FID card. The ammunition and cloth were taken as evidence. Anyone with any information related to this incident is asked to call the Cambridge Police at 617-349-3300. The Cambridge Police will have an increased presence in the area as the investigation into this incident is ongoing. Members of the Cambridge Police Department will be participating in a previously scheduled community discussion along with Mayor McGovern and City Manager DePasquale related to recent gun activity in The Port and Harrington/Wellington area tonight at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Pisani Center, which is located at 131 Washington Street. All are encouraged to attend.
