June 2018 in Review, From Burgers to Barbecue

Gypsy Place Coffee and Juice Bar (90 Hampshire St., Cambridge): A 20-seat cafe with juice, smoothies, breakfast sandwiches, and more.

Ryles Jazz Club (212 Hampshire St., Inman Square, Cambridge): After over 40 years, the Inman Square music venue and restaurant has shut down. The owners are focusing on their almost century-old deli across the street, S&S.

This article has 19 other Boston locations (Show)

Cafe Juiceup (1290 Blue Hill Ave., Mattapan, Boston): Juices, smoothies, and more.

Cava (669 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): This is the fourth local outpost for the DC-based fast-casual Mediterranean chain. Next, it’ll open in Cambridge’s Kendall Square.

Pavement Coffeehouse (415 Western Ave., Brighton, Boston): The seventh location for the local cafe chain is also home to a coffee roasting facility and commissary kitchen.

Rabottini’s Pizza (182 Western Ave., Lower Allston, Boston): What started as a one-day-a-week pop-up inside of a Cambridge bagel shop is now a free-standing, five-day-a-week pop-up (expected to last through the fall), serving pizza, salads, and a few flavors of Gracie’s Ice Cream.

Revival Cafe & Kitchen (125 Cambridgepark Dr., Alewife, Cambridge): This is the first of three new projects — two Revivals and one beer hall called Mothership — from Steve “Nookie” Postal (Commonwealth, Crema Cafe) and Liza Shirazi (Crema Cafe). Coffee, sandwiches, and more.

Sassafras (688 Broadway, Ball Square, Somerville): Eat at Jumbo’s has been reborn into a fully vegetarian (and mostly vegan) operation.

Soleil (2306 Washington St., Roxbury, Boston): Southern-influenced dining, with counter-service breakfast and lunch (lots of sandwiches) and full-service dinner.

Soup Shack (779 Centre St., Jamaica Plain, Boston): A pan-Asian soup shop, featuring everything from pho to ramen.

Sushi Today (1562 Tremont St., Mission Hill, Boston): Sushi and sashimi, with plenty of combos available.

Centre Street Cafe (669 Centre St., Jamaica Plain, Boston): The Centre Street team is revamping the Italian restaurant into a space-themed diner called Little Dipper, which could reopen in July.

Potbelly Sandwich Shop (1 Porter Rd.): The Chicago-based sandwich chain has other local locations, including one in Downtown Boston.

Refuge Cafe (155 Brighton Ave., Allston, Boston): There was a false alarm a couple years ago, but now Refuge Cafe is really gone, leaving behind only a series of bizarre Facebook posts, as was its style.

Roost Bistro (259 Newbury St., Back Bay): This New American bistro closed after four years, but its sibling bakery next door, Patisserie on Newbury, remains open.

Stephi’s in Southie (130 Dorchester Ave., South Boston): In the wake of the joining of the hospitality groups behind the Stephanie’s restaurants, Met Back Bay, and others, one member of the Stephanie’s family, the five-year-old Stephi’s in Southie, has shut its doors.

The Wholy Grain (275 Shawmut Ave., South End, Boston): The neighborhood bakery and cafe, which had been open for eight years, will be replaced by a new Chilacates location.

Wok N’ Roll (1908 Massachusetts Ave., Porter Square, Cambridge): The Chinese restaurant had been around for over two decades.

Cappy’s Tavern (11 Wolcott Ct., Hyde Park, Boston): After eight decades, this classic dive bar will shut down in late July.

Intermission Tavern (228 Tremont St., Downtown Boston): This Theater District pub will shut down at some point in the near future, to be replaced by the Fourth Wall.

Redd’s in Rozzie (4257 Washington St., Roslindale, Boston): This Roslindale hotspot will close in July, with owner Charlie Redd citing changes in Boston’s liquor licensing system that would devalue his license.

June 2018 in Review, From Burgers to Barbecue
As we said goodbye to spring and hello to summer during June 2018, plenty of restaurants opened around the Boston area, including several food vendors at Somerville's growing Bow Market, a Thai restaurant in Somerville, a bagel shop in Cambridge, a rooftop bar in Salem, and more.

In 2011 Anthony Bourdain paid a visit to East Cambridge during the "Boston" episode of his show "No Reservations." He came to East Cambridge in pursuit of his constant goal to experience the people, traditions and flavors of different cultures. In this particular case, he was drawn to the Azorean Portuguese culture that reminded him of his earliest years learning to cook in Provincetown. He didn't come to the East Cambridge / Inman Square area because it was a "dining destination," he came because the neighborhood's heart and soul embraced diversity of culture, and food was just one of the ways it did that. He wanted everyone to open their eyes and see our differences and celebrate them, even if it got messy. During his visit to Boston, while visiting the radio show of Howie Carr, Bourdain is quoted saying, "Hanging out only with people who agree with me is about as boring a prospect as I can imagine." So, maybe today you'll stop into that market you've been curious about or you'll try that new restaurant you've been meaning to try. Or maybe you'll even buy that plane ticket for that trip you've been dreaming about. And, maybe during dinner tonight you'll raise a glass of Vinho Verde and say "saúde!" No matter what we drink and no matter how we say "cheers!" -- we all appreciate being fed good food and being surrounded by good company. RIP Mr. Anthony Bourdain. You have a place saved at so many tables.

"Highland Fried plays to Inman’s “funky” side, especially with the tiki bar, Romano says. “That’s where the kind of funky Inman Square thing comes into play, where it’s like, ‘What does that really have to do with fried chicken or barbecue? Our Officers have identified a suspect, arres...

Our Officers have identified a suspect, arrested another suspect, and recovered a firearm and ammunition following two separate overnight gunshot incidents. A shooting occurred at Richie’s Shell this morning on 1001 Cambridge Street in Cambridge at 3:58 a.m. The victim is a 50-year-old clerk at the station, who confronted a black male outside the station after they stole a bottle of water. The suspect retrieved a bag from a vehicle, pulled out a firearm and shot at the clerk. The driver of the vehicle fled in one direction and the shooter fled on foot. The clerk was conveyed to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries after the shot grazed his foot. He has since been released from the hospital. After an initial investigation, officers recovered the firearm used in the shooting in a black plastic bag on Inman Street. The driver of the vehicle was also identified by officers, stopped and taken into the Cambridge Police Station for questioning. The suspect who fled on foot is described as a black male with long hair. He was wearing dark pants and a blue shirt. Officers have identified that suspect and continue to investigate this incident. Earlier in the evening, police made an arrest following an investigation of gunshots that occurred late last night in the area of Washington Elms and Harvard Street. Following a ShotSpotter activation and calls to the Emergency Communications Department, Cambridge Police responded to the Washington Elms parking lot on Harvard Street last night at approximately 11:53 p.m. for a report of multiple gunshots. Two vehicles – described as sedans – were reported leaving the scene at the time of the shooting. There are currently no reported injuries or victims, however, two unoccupied vehicles parked adjacent to each other were damaged by gunshots. Cambridge Police searched the area and were also able to locate additional shell casings in the area. Reporting parties indicated a large group fighting in the area approximately 30 minutes prior to the gunshots. Multiple individuals in the area of the gunshots were stopped and questioned. One of the individuals – Abigail Riskey, 19, 265 Columbia Street in Cambridge -- was asked to remove items out of her purse to ensure there were no weapons in her possession. One of the items was something heavy inside of a piece of cloth. Officers unknotted the cloth and observed a box with a pictured handgun and bullets on the cover. Upon further inspection, the box contained numerous rounds of 9MM ammunition. Riskey did not provide a license to carry ammunition or a firearm and was placed under arrest for Possession of Ammunition without an FID card. The ammunition and cloth were taken as evidence. Anyone with any information related to this incident is asked to call the Cambridge Police at 617-349-3300. The Cambridge Police will have an increased presence in the area as the investigation into this incident is ongoing. Members of the Cambridge Police Department will be participating in a previously scheduled community discussion along with Mayor McGovern and City Manager DePasquale related to recent gun activity in The Port and Harrington/Wellington area tonight at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Pisani Center, which is located at 131 Washington Street. All are encouraged to attend.
