As #WomensHistoryMonth comes to a close, it’s time for a #CSBAspotlight on On The Rise (OTR)! OTR is a team of 13 staff members (and volunteers & interns) that help provide homeless and formerly homeless women with the tools and services they need to succeed. Get an inside look at the organization below! “OTR was founded in the mid 1990s by a recent Harvard University graduate who worked at the student-run shelter and realized there is a whole community of people who were falling through the cracks of social services. At the time, many services for the homeless claiming to be inclusive would screen women out because of issues like substance abuse & addiction, mental health issues, domestic violence situations, etc. and require people to prove readiness for services. The basis for OTR was to create a very low threshold for entry and not have a timeline-centered program of how long people have before they should be ‘cured.’ These issues that took a lifetime to develop are not going to disappear overnight — sometimes a 90-day program isn’t enough. Our house, the Safe Haven, really becomes home for the women who come here. They can use our address as their permanent mailing address, relax and watch TV, check email, do laundry, take a shower, enjoy meals, and so much more. With a holistic approach, we aim to let these women become comfortable, form relationships with the staff, and lead us to understanding their needs and allowing us to help them access the services they need. They are the experts in what they need and we’re creating an environment where their initiative can flourish. Our programs have a huge emphasis on building relationships and trust. Some of the main issues associated with homelessness include substance abuse, medical and mental health, and legal issues. In dealing with these issues, many of the women have had experiences that lead them to not trust people, specifically in the social services, healthcare, and legal systems. We work with them to provide and connect them to the services they can trust. A big initiative of ours is the Keep the Keys program — emphasizing the importance of continued services after women have found housing. There are many opportunities that just aren’t an option when you’re homeless (e.g. jobs, healthcare, getting an education) because it’s just too difficult or chaotic. Those opportunities tend to open up for the first time in many years once a woman has secured housing. We’re invested in these relationships long-term and want to be a part of that journey and ensure their continued success.” — Martha Sandler, Benny Wheat, Charyti Reiter, & Delphene Mooney of On The Rise On The Rise would like to send a special thank you to their local partners, volunteers, and interns for all the work they do to keep the organization running! For more information about the organization, visit ontherise.org!

Cambridge Brands Inc. (CBI), manufacturer of Junior Mints, Charleston Chews, Sugar Babies, Junior Caramels, Cella’s Dips, Tootsie Mini Bites, and Fruit Chew Mini Bites, is proposing to construct a modest addition to its existing candy manufacturing facility at 810 Main Street. The addition is needed to house a utility vault and new electrical system to replace deteriorating equipment that was installed in the 1950s. In consultation with Eversource, CBI has determined that the clearances of the existing facility are insufficient to accommodate modern electrical equipment. The primary function of the addition will be to house the switch equipment of the new electrical system; the balance of the space will be used for candy manufacturing. The existing building is approximately 146,300 sf. and is five stories high. The addition will be approximately 21,540 square feet with a footprint of approximately 3,600 square feet; it will consist of a below-grade basement and five stories above grade. The 810 Main Street property is located within the BB District and the Central Square Overlay District. Please join us as we discuss the impacts of this project on our Central Square community!

It’s time for the latest #CSBAspotlight — Teddy Shoes, Inc.! This #CentralSQ staple has been a part of our community since 1957 and has evolved with the neighborhood. “When my father (Theodore) started the business, his parents owned this building — so we’ve always been located in this exact spot. I was finishing up at the University of Miami and when my father called and offered me the opportunity to take over his business. I started with him in August of 1978 and I’ve been here ever since. He told me ‘customers can buy shoes anywhere, but if you treat them well they’re always going to come back.’ We aim to really take care of our clients and make sure that everyone leaves satisfied. When we opened, the store specialized in cancellations and factory seconds. At one point there were 16 shoe stores on the block, but Teddy Shoes is the last one standing. We’ve really evolved to be a dance supply store — it’s nearly 90% of my business. We cover everything from ballet to flamenco and carry all of the necessary shoes and garments. We do have family footwear, ladies shoes, oversize, hosiery, and lingerie as well. In 1993, the only two Capezio dance stores in the Boston area closed at the same time. My customers asked me to try to get the line, so I decided to make an investment. From there we began selling more & more dance brands and formed great relationships with companies like the Boston Ballet, José Mateo Ballet Theatre, and so many other local studios. We carry specific items that they require their dancers wear and even list each school’s dress code on our website. I’ve been a member of the CSBA for a long, long time and am proud to still support the organization. I can’t stress enough the importance of small business. We work with our customers to give them the best quality of products and service possible — and see countless return customers due to their satisfaction. If customers don’t give small businesses the opportunity to earn their business, it’s going to be really hard for them to stick around.” — Steven Adelson, Owner of Teddy Shoes
