Cambridge Historical Commission added 3 new p...

A little-discussed topic in the history of Cambridge industry is the plight of women foundry workers of the 20th century. One such foundry is the former Blake & Knowles Foundry, located at 101 Rogers Street in the heart of East Cambridge. The building was originally erected as a brick foundry in 1890 and became a steam pump works, and an iron works before being converted into office space in the early 1980s. Around 1911, controversy arose among concerns of women performing what was considered a man’s work while being paid only half the established hourly rate and suffering poor conditions, especially those working in core rooms. Dispute festered in the public arena and among political figures, culminating in a large debate at Boston’s Faneuil Hall. As a result of these talks and investigations of working conditions, the Massachusetts legislature passed the Employment of Women in the Core Rooms, Acts of 1912, Chapter 653, and a historic first Minimum Wage Act for Women in the United States: Chapter 706, Acts of 1912. If you would like to learn more about the women foundry workers of Cambridge and the buildings in which they made their mark, please contact us to make a research appointment.
