In 2011 Anthony Bourdain paid a visit to East Cambridge during the "Boston" episode of his show "No Reservations." He came to East Cambridge in pursuit of his constant goal to experience the people, traditions and flavors of different cultures. In this particular case, he was drawn to the Azorean Portuguese culture that reminded him of his earliest years learning to cook in Provincetown. He didn't come to the East Cambridge / Inman Square area because it was a "dining destination," he came because the neighborhood's heart and soul embraced diversity of culture, and food was just one of the ways it did that. He wanted everyone to open their eyes and see our differences and celebrate them, even if it got messy. During his visit to Boston, while visiting the radio show of Howie Carr, Bourdain is quoted saying, "Hanging out only with people who agree with me is about as boring a prospect as I can imagine." So, maybe today you'll stop into that market you've been curious about or you'll try that new restaurant you've been meaning to try. Or maybe you'll even buy that plane ticket for that trip you've been dreaming about. And, maybe during dinner tonight you'll raise a glass of Vinho Verde and say "saúde!" No matter what we drink and no matter how we say "cheers!" -- we all appreciate being fed good food and being surrounded by good company. RIP Mr. Anthony Bourdain. You have a place saved at so many tables.

"Highland Fried plays to Inman’s “funky” side, especially with the tiki bar, Romano says. “That’s where the kind of funky Inman Square thing comes into play, where it’s like, ‘What does that really have to do with fried chicken or barbecue? A tiki place?’ But that’s why I like it, because it’s different. Why not?” says Romano."

Our Officers have identified a suspect, arrested another suspect, and recovered a firearm and ammunition following two separate overnight gunshot incidents. A shooting occurred at Richie’s Shell this morning on 1001 Cambridge Street in Cambridge at 3:58 a.m. The victim is a 50-year-old clerk at the station, who confronted a black male outside the station after they stole a bottle of water. The suspect retrieved a bag from a vehicle, pulled out a firearm and shot at the clerk. The driver of the vehicle fled in one direction and the shooter fled on foot. The clerk was conveyed to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries after the shot grazed his foot. He has since been released from the hospital. After an initial investigation, officers recovered the firearm used in the shooting in a black plastic bag on Inman Street. The driver of the vehicle was also identified by officers, stopped and taken into the Cambridge Police Station for questioning. The suspect who fled on foot is described as a black male with long hair. He was wearing dark pants and a blue shirt. Officers have identified that suspect and continue to investigate this incident. Earlier in the evening, police made an arrest following an investigation of gunshots that occurred late last night in the area of Washington Elms and Harvard Street. Following a ShotSpotter activation and calls to the Emergency Communications Department, Cambridge Police responded to the Washington Elms parking lot on Harvard Street last night at approximately 11:53 p.m. for a report of multiple gunshots. Two vehicles – described as sedans – were reported leaving the scene at the time of the shooting. There are currently no reported injuries or victims, however, two unoccupied vehicles parked adjacent to each other were damaged by gunshots. Cambridge Police searched the area and were also able to locate additional shell casings in the area. Reporting parties indicated a large group fighting in the area approximately 30 minutes prior to the gunshots. Multiple individuals in the area of the gunshots were stopped and questioned. One of the individuals – Abigail Riskey, 19, 265 Columbia Street in Cambridge -- was asked to remove items out of her purse to ensure there were no weapons in her possession. One of the items was something heavy inside of a piece of cloth. Officers unknotted the cloth and observed a box with a pictured handgun and bullets on the cover. Upon further inspection, the box contained numerous rounds of 9MM ammunition. Riskey did not provide a license to carry ammunition or a firearm and was placed under arrest for Possession of Ammunition without an FID card. The ammunition and cloth were taken as evidence. Anyone with any information related to this incident is asked to call the Cambridge Police at 617-349-3300. The Cambridge Police will have an increased presence in the area as the investigation into this incident is ongoing. Members of the Cambridge Police Department will be participating in a previously scheduled community discussion along with Mayor McGovern and City Manager DePasquale related to recent gun activity in The Port and Harrington/Wellington area tonight at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Pisani Center, which is located at 131 Washington Street. All are encouraged to attend.
